I don't know but it's been said,
there's a group named Quail Unlimited.
Noble folks from all around,
promoting conservation that is sound.
I don't know but I've been told,
about a man named Leopold.
Wrote an ethic for the land,
taught us how to understand.
I don't know but I just heard,
about a man named Herb Stoddard.
In his book now he did tell,
all about the bobwhite quail.
Texas ranchers they've got class.
Bobwhite quail nest in bunchgrass.
Cattle grazing is okay,
if it's done the proper way.
If your quail you would protect,
habitat you cannot neglect.
Food and shelter, water too,
There's lots of things that you can do.
A quail's life is full of tests,
Many critters break up their nests.
Possums, skunks and raccoons too,
It's enough to make a bobwhite blue.
A bobwhite quail has many needs,
insects, greens and forb seeds.
On your next outdoor excursion,
note how they need interspersion.
Bobwhite cadets give many talks,
everything from plants to hawks.
Displays, speeches, seeds and slides,
about the habitat where the quail resides.
Left, left, leave some brush left.
Left, left, leave some brush left.
If you think that quail are neat,
please don't clear all of that mesquite.
Loafing cover, plum and lote.
Save a little, don't miss the boat
Mean Gene the Bobwhite Marine,
leads a life that's pure and clean.
Taught us all to give a hoot,
Showed us the "Bobwhite Salute."
Have you heard about the tale
of a puppet named "Dale the Quail."
Two girls named Dana did profess,
he was the key to their success.
All across this great nation,
we're in need of conservation.
In Texas progress is being made,
Thanks to the Bobwhite Brigade.
Many ranchers do declare,
that they've got too much prickly-pear.
It's a plant that they've learned to despise,
but it sure looks good through a quail hen's eyes.
I don't want no teenage queen,
I just want to be a quail marine.
Work all day til the day is done,
Learn a lot and have some fun.
At first I was a little squirmy,
when they mentioned taxidermy,
blood and guts and brains and eyes,
but it turned out well to my surprise!
A Marine's motto is "Semper fi",
always faithful til you die.
Commitment is what it's about,
that is why we march and shout.
I don't know but I've been told,
the Bobwhite Brigade is solid gold.
If you want to be real cool,
follow us cause we rule.
Buckskin Brigade Cadences
In keeping with the "boot camp" theme, it's important to stress motivation and teamwork at every opportunity while learning the ecological lessons of life. The end of every stanza is followed by "sound off, 1,2, sound off, 3,4, bring it on down now, 1, 2, 3, 4 . . . 1,2...3,4!" Recite them with gusto! -- DR
Deer feel safe within the brush;
Good habitat you cannot rush.
Sculpt a path for them to tread
Leave a place to make a bed.
Trophy deer are made not born;
Habitat will grow the "horn".
For browse and forbs will deer compete;
Make sure they've got enough to eat.
Whitetail, Whitetail can you see?
Then it's not the place to be.
Rolling hills and brush to hide,
Protect the fawn that's by your side.
Grass provides a place to sleep,
But it's not what deer need to eat.
Browse and forbs are their best feeds,
Manage to provide their needs.
If you're gonna' feed and fence us,
Don't forget to do a census.
Fawns at heel, bucks and does
Don't forget those age ratios.
As a hunter I pay my dues
My license fee the state does use.
The excise tax on ammo and gear,
Help all wildlife, not just the deer.
La Bandera is our home.
Buckskin Brigade will never roam
Firmly planted are our roots
To Jack, a big Buckskin salute!
My antlers fork, I bound not trot
A white-tailed deer I am not
A black-tipped tail and real long ears
I am called the desert mule deer.
If your deer you want to "score",
Help to get them over a "4".
Growth potential you'll maximize
And bigger antlers you'll realize.
Habitat takes time to grow
In between its time to sow.
Food plots can provide a feed.
Nutrition deer really need.
If deer you keep behind high fence,
You better come to their defense.
Populations and habitat,
Management is where it's at.
I don't know but I've been told,
About a man named Leopold.

All across this great nation,
We're in need of conservation.
Advancements now are being made,
Thanks to the Buckskin Brigade.
I don't know but I've been told,
Buckskin Brigade is solid gold.
We have come from far and near,
To learn about the white-tailed deer.

Always faithful ‘til you die.
Commitment is what its all about,
that is why we march and shout.
